The Scoop about Online Degree Programs
We’ve all been tempted to either go for that degree or to pump up our existing degree, but the allure of the “fast fix” to your educational background can sometimes cause some bad decisions to be made. When searching for a way to build up your pedigree, an online diploma or degree might be the right move for you, but use caution when selecting the school, because as with all online booming markets, this one has it’s risks.
There are many valid, respectable schools that offer online degrees or just online classes, and there is nothing wrong with pursuing this avenue for advancing your career. If you are careful and do your homework (pun intended) the chances of getting burned by an unethical scammer will be minimized. Generally speaking, the shadier “diploma mills” are usually pretty easy to spot – but you still must always be on your guard.
Does accredited = credible?
Accredited doesn’t always equate to credible – many unscrupulous schools claim to be accredited, and probably are in some fashion, but this alone does not make them the right choice for an online education.
What can you do?
- First and foremost, use a shockingly low-tech tool to verify the legitimacy of your prospective school – call them on the telephone. Talk to them – ask them questions. Odds are, a few of them won’t even return your call.
- Check out their physical location – are they in the US? Is their listed location real? A little bit of searching on the internet can tell you a lot about the validity of their claims as far as their physical location goes.
- Do they have a good reputation? Ask you local community school or college if they know anything about the school you are considering. Ask them if they know of any that they would recommend.
Like everything else tugging at your wallet – a little prudence and caution can save a lot of hassle down the road. Good luck with your pursuit of educational advancement!
