Getting a Credit Report as Part of the Job Search
Your Credit Report – Another Critical Job Search Tool
When looking through our arsenal of job search tools, one very important tool can be often overlooked – the credit report. More importantly, the FREE credit report is often missed. Most of us know that we have access to a free credit report on the major reporting sites each year, but what many fail to realize is that a great time to use their credit report is right before the job search!
Often many employers will run a simple credit report on you as part of a standard background investigation. This means that any unpleasant fiscal skeletons you may have could come bumping forward in the night to create a new nightmare for all involved parties.
You Cannot be Excluded from Consideration Due to Bankruptcy
While it’s true that an employer can’t legally refuse to hire you because of a past bankruptcy, generally the events in your credit history that lead to your bankruptcy are enough to cause sufficient alarm. In any event, it’s better to know going in to the interview if there are any issues to be explained.
Don’t let your credit report scare you
Most employers have very good reasons for running credit reports. If you’ve had a few bumps along the road it’s probably nothing to worry about. In the event it’s addressed with you, it’s still better that you have a recent credit report – because finding out about credit issues from your future employer is certainly not the optimal way to go about a credit report.
